Search Engine Optimisation
Millions of people use search engines every day and the Internet is a crowded place. Gone are the days when visitors will trawl through pages of search results to find what they’re looking for; typically, they will check one, maybe two pages of results before making a selection - so it’s critical that your website is optimised to achieve the highest possible ranking within search results. This is achieved using Search Engine Optimisation (SEO).
Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) is the practice of improving a website's visibility in search engines by optimising its pages, content and HTML to improve relevance relating to specific keywords and phrases and make it more accessible for search engine rankings. SEO is a complex subject which is impossible to do justice here. However, we have summarised some of the basics to help give a general understanding of the practice.

How it Works
In order for your website to be included in search results, it must first be indexed by search engines - in other words, the likes of Google, Yahoo! and Bing need to know that your website exists. There are defined ways to submit your site to search engines so that they know all of the pages within your site (i.e. your site map) and, once this is done, those search engines will ‘crawl’ your entire website to analyse its content and HTML so that your pages can be ranked in search results.
Optimising a website for search engine rankings falls into two main areas:
On Site SEO
On Site SEO refers to SEO techniques which can be implemented within your website and is comprised of three main components:
- Code Structure and Semantic Markup. The way that code is written is really important for search engines to be able to crawl your website effectively.
- Meta Data and Page Titles. Used effectively these data tags within the code of web pages can help you rise through the search result listings.
- Natural, Engaging Content. A common mistake with SEO is to cram pages with identified search terms - this is bad practice, resulting in content that is of little value to visitors and poor rankings within search results (search engines are now well-used to identifying ‘keyword stuffing’ within websites and ranking them accordingly). Websites with original content which includes well placed keywords used naturally and conservatively achieve higher rankings in search results, as do sites where content is regularly updated.
Off Site SEO
Off Site SEO refers to SEO techniques employed outside of your website. In short, this is concerned with obtaining links to your website - but all links are not equal! We can offer advice and practical assistance with promoting your website and obtaining links from other websites in an effort to improve your own search rankings.
